Time magazine names "Droid" Gadget of the year
Time magazine has named Motorola's Droid as the "gadget of the Year". The "Droid" known as The Motorola Milestone in the UK is also a big seller in the US.
"It has a touchscreen and a slide-out qwerty keyboard, and it runs Android, the Linux based mobile operating system created by Google"
While Time admits that The Droid lacked the glossy finish of the iPhone, it notes that the gadgets's touchscreen is really clear and it has a physical keyboard which comes in handy.
The iPhone that won the award last year came in only fourth this time.
"The other gadgets that made up the top 10 included Barnes & Noble's ebook reader, the Nook; the Dyson Air Multiplier fan; the Canon EOS 1D Mark IV, the Dell Adamo XPS; Fuji's FinePix Real 3D W1 camera; Casio's G-Shock GW7900B-1 watch; Beats Solo headphones; and the Panasonic G10 range of plasma screen televisions"
This is what Time said about the "Droid"
Everybody likes Android, Google's open-source smartphone operating system. But a smartphone operating system isn't all that satisfying without an actual kick-ass smartphone wrapped around it. Now Android has one: The Droid is a hefty beast, a metal behemoth without the gloss and finish of the iPhone, but you don't miss it. The Droid's touchscreen is phenomenally sharp and vivid, it has an actual physical (not great, but good enough) keyboard, and best of all, the Droid is on Verizon's best-of-breed 3G network. It's Android's first credible challenge to the iPhone. Price: $300.
