How does Google Trends work
Note: This post was written a long time ago and since then Google Trends has gone through a radical transformation. One notable change is that you cannot check website statistics like before. If you are unfamiliar with what that means - here is a simple explanation. If you wanted to see how many people visit a site on the web - Google Trends used to deliver such results. This is over now and Google Trends has to do with what is actually trending right now on the InterWebs.
When you access Google Trends there are three main categories.

1. Hot Searches

Clicking on this option will let you know what are the hottest searches on the internet right now.

2. Top Charts

Clicking on this option will show you web-searches organized as charts. You can see everything organized under headings like Actors, Animals and Books etc. Clicking on any of these charts will show you what's trending under these topics. This is relatively new and an amazing addition to Google Trends.

3. Explore

Here you can check out search terms - there are some by default, but you can add your own. So you can check out a particular search term, and how it's been trending on the internet. When it started becoming popular and how many people are searching for it. A whole lot of information is being made available.
